The river walkway at Canary Riverside South was a safe convenient route between Limehouse and the Isle of Dogs for cyclists and pedestrians of all ages. Since it's closure almost three years ago cyclists and pedestrians have had to use the alternative route which involves two sets of stairs (or 2 lifts one of which is very small).
It also involves crossing 5 roads, two with pedestrian lights (one with a very long delay); one with a zebra crossing and two with no controlled crossing. I used to cycle with my children to school but have had to give up as this alternative route is just not practical. At present the foundations at the site of Canary Riverside South have been completed and building work is on hold. The site and the river walkway have been completely empty since September 2010.
We the undersigned call on Canary Wharf Group / Songbird to:
1. Re-open the River Walkway to pedestrians and cyclists whilst building work is suspended at Canary Riverside South;
2. When building work is restarted we would like you provide a reasonable, safe pedestrian and cycle route from the river walkway to the Westferry Road, Isle of Dogs. A “reasonable route” for cyclists should not involve lifts and stairs and must be safe and suitable for cyclists and pedestrians of all ages, including children.
