According to the Eating Disorder Coalition, Eating disorders affect millions of Americans:

• Approximately 11 million Americans suffer from an eating disorder;
• Nearly half of all Americans personally know someone with an eating disorder;
• Anorexia is the 3rd most common chronic illness among adolescents.

80% to 85% percent of people affected by eating disorders are women although eating disorders do not discriminate: men and women, all economic classes, young and old are affected.

Meanwhile many in the advertising industry would say 100% of the visual imagery in advertisements are digitally retouched in some way. In the vast majority of the images the models are digitally thinned. This is creating an "ideal body image" that is literally unrealistic and unachievable.

The connection between eating disorders of all kinds and inaccurate advertising images is certain and yet, despite pleas from organizations calling for reforms or warning labels, nothing in the industry is changing.

Even the American Medical Association also called for industry standards in photo altering, saying: "We must stop exposing impressionable children and teenagers to advertisements portraying models with body types only attainable with the help of photo editing software."

Digital modification of bodies that are widely marketed as "ideal" is dangerous on more levels than we can accurately name. Everyone knows it.

Oprah,

You have dedicated your career to serving the greater good. You have championed women over and over again and your contributions have made you the torch carrier for justice and truth on issues others wouldn't even talk about.

In the face of an advertising industry who deals in dishonesty that legitimately hurts women, but controls billions of dollars, it's not hard to see why nothing changes.

But if you and your organization won't take a stand against digitally distorted advertising images that harm women, who will?

We are calling on you to take the first bold step against the adverting industry's perpetual policy of peddling lies. We are asking you to stop purchasing advertising in the form of digitally thinned imagery.

We are asking you to take a stand on behalf of all women and demand honest images of real beautiful women from the advertisers in your magazine.

Women with buying power are waiting for someone to celebrate them honestly. Advertisers need to be held to a standard that requires that.

Thank you for refusing digitally thinned advertising images in your magazine.
