REINSTATE A 24-HOUR ACCIDENT & EMERGENCY UNIT AT QUEEN MARY'S HOSPITAL, SIDCUP - organised by Independents to Save Queen Mary's Hospital
The "temporary" closure of Queen Mary's Accident & Emergency Unit from 9th September 2009 between 8.00pm and 8.00am every night is part of a concerted effort by South London Healthcare [sic] NHS Trust, led by Dr Chris Streather, Chief Executive, to downsize the importance Queen Mary's - and then close it - with a systematic dismantling of what was a first-class, fully-admitting hospital and the only hospital in the London Borough of Bexley.
In recent years, under both Labour and Conservative governments, the local area has lost an A&E Unit at Orpington Hospital and an entire fully-admitting hospital at Bromley South. Now, under A Picture of Health [sic], Queen Mary's has been singled out as the cheapest hospital to close as it is the only one locally to have no costly 30-year Private Finance Initiative obligations attached to it.
South London Healthcare NHS Trust is now advancing plans to sell-off parts of the Queen Mary's site. This will prevent any expanding of the hospital at any time in the future and is a complete dereliction of care by Dr Streather and his board towards the needs of future generations.
The action that is being taken is against the wishes of the majority of patients, local residents and Queen Mary's excellent consultants (3 out of 4 of whom have expressed opposition).
We, the undersigned, call on Dr Chris Streather, Chief Executive, and the board of South London Healthcare NHS Trust immediately:
1. to reinstate a 24-hour Accident & Emergency unit at Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup, and
2. to fight, along with residents, businesses, patients and medical staff to maintain Queen Mary's as a fully admitting hospital and not be part of a systematic dismantling of it.
