Tameside Council has withdrawn the school crossing patrol for Stalyhill Junior and Infants Schools, Stalybridge, due to 'government cuts', yet is able to find hundreds of thousands of pounds each year for non-essential items such as its Tameside Citizen council newspaper.
Please don't put children's lives at risk, Tameside Council. Give us our lollipop lady back!
"We, the undersigned, implore Tameside MBC to reinstate the school crossing patrol on Mottram Old Road for Stalyhill Junior and Infant Schools. This is a VERY BUSY road, which acts as major thoroughfare for thousands of vehicles each day.
Along its length it does not have a single pedestrian crossing facility nor pavement between Hereford Way and Stalyhill Drive. We are told that the crossing patrol has been withdrawn due to lack of funding, however the Tameside Council website states, "School Crossing Patrols are provided where children are in danger from road traffic when walking to and from school."
Furthermore, the withdrawal of the crossing patrol is in contravention of Tameside Council policy to encourage children to walk to school - a policy avidly embraced by parents and children of both Stalyhill Junior and Infant Schools.
Therefore, we believe that a school crossing patrol is vital for our children's safety, and beg Tameside Council to find savings elsewhere and not put children's lives at risk."
