As a sophomore at at the University of Laverne, I have just begun to feel familiar to my campus and surroundings along with my major now that I am out of my First Year Learning Experience (FLEX). Although I feel that program has helped, it has come to my attention that along with meeting my General Education, Major, and Minor requirements, I also have to meet Laverne experience requirements. While I can try to understand why these classes can benefit an undergraduate student, My fellow students and I believe these classes, especially the Sophomore LaVerne Experience should be removed from our graduation requirements within the context that these classes have been perceived by students who have taken them as a "waste of time and credits" and students on campus feel as if the class has not benefitted them in any way during their college career. SoLVE is supposed to be a sophomore course in which students try to learn about their career paths, how to connect with their community, and how to build a portfolio. However, based on past testimony of students who have taken/are taking the course, they have not reaped any of these benefits from it and feel as if the class instead pressures them to make room in their hectic schedules to go to a class that can basically be an online course. It can be arguable that the E-portfolio portion can be beneficial, but if you take into consideration the fact that sophomores are fresh out of their FLEX and trying to become more familiar with their career path, it may not be the best time to build a portfolio when you can't put anything beneficial in it. As for fitting the actual course into our schedules, it can be extremely difficult, especially for science and Social science majors whose classes are 4-5 credits EACH.
For us, those 2 credits can be keeping us a class closer to graduating, and because of this, theres more time needed to graduation, and since our tuition is already high students might not want to waste time and will transfer and/or take the course somewhere else, eventually costing the university money in potential tuition. In short, removing this course would be beneficial to all.
We, the undersigned, call on the University of Laverne to remove the Sophomore LaVerne Experience (SoLVE) course from the graduation requirements for all current and future students at the University of LaVerne starting Spring of 2018.
