Congress,
African-Americans make up 12.3% of the population but account for 42% of estimated AIDS cases.
This petition was created with the express purpose of getting the community involved in the renewal of the CARE Act. The renewal of the CARE Act would provide funding to organizations that:
Provide much needed medication to HIV/AIDS patients (which would eliminate long waiting lists)
Educate the African-American community about the importance of knowing their HIV/AIDS status (which would decrease the rapid spread of the virus in the community)
Work with churches to educate their congregations about the importance of choosing to make this community problem a conquerable challenge (which would eliminate the negative social stigma attached to HIV/AIDS in the African-American community)
It is time to let our state representatives in the House and the Senate know that the spread of HIV/AIDS in the African-American community is disproportionate and that the renewal of the CARE Act is essential to the survival and well-being of the community.
Sincerely,
Young Professionals Network
The Northern Virginia Urban League
