Edinburgh Council are soon to sell off the Land on which Meadowbank stadium is located on. The money generated from this will go to refurbish the Commonwealth Games pool for the Commonwealth Games. No provision has been made to replace the Velodrome at Meadowbank, yet all other sports located there have been catered for in the future.
An new Indoor velodrome in Glasgow cannot be seen as a direct replacement. The future of all young East of Scotland cyclists is at stake here as a velodrome provides a safe, traffic free environment for them to train and practice on.
We, the undersigned, urge Edinburgh Council to provide a velodrome, of some sort, based in the East of Scotland as a direct replacement for the soon to be demolished Meadowbank stadium. A new indoor velodrome in Glasgow cannot be deemed a suitable replacement due to it's location.
The loss of a such a facility in the East of Scotland seriously jeapordises the future of many promising youngsters, many of whom have used Meadowbank Velodrome in the past as a springboard to National, International, Commonwealth, Olympic and World Champion successes.
It is imperative that Edinburgh Council caters for a sport which has has seen no substantial facility investment for decades, yet returned so much in terms of publicity.
We urge Edinburgh Council to replace Meadowbank Velodrome with another suitable facility as soon as possible?
