On June 6, 2014 a Monark Transportation bus driver was stopped for erratic driving on Route 8 just minutes after dropping off a bus full of Pine-Richland children at St. Ursula School. The driver was found to be well over the legal limit for alcohol and has since been charged.
While our community was very lucky this did not result in tragedy, changes to the current drug/alcohol testing policy must be made immediately to avoid future recurrence.
Monark Transportation currently uses a random drug testing company that pulls random names throughout the school year for testing. Some drivers might be tested multiple times while others (like the accused) are never tested. Drug/alcohol testing is not done when complaints are filed about a driver.
We the undersigned implore Pine-Richland School District to require Monark Transportation to move to a drug/alcohol testing policy that tests ALL drivers at random times throughout the year.
Also, we believe drug/alcohol testing should be done on drivers anytime complaints are received about erratic driving or safety issues.
