If you are a resident of Observatory, Cape Town, this Petition urgently needs your signature.
What is this Petition about?
Rawson Property Developers intend to build a huge block of flats at the corner of Bowden and Main roads in Observatory. The proposed building will be 9-stories high with 188 units, intended to house >200 students. More information can be found at: http://www.rawson.co.za/news/rawson-developers-announce-new-development-in-observatory-cape-town-id-1698.
What is the problem?
The height of the building and its footprint have major implications for the entire neighbourhood. The building will be visible from across Observatory, and cast a shadow well past Lower Main Road in the afternoon. The density of occupants will mean substantial increases in traffic and parking requirements. This development threatens the character of Observatory.
Was there any consultation?
There was no consultation with the community regarding this development. Rawson submitted their development plan to the City Planning Department on 5 December 2014 for approval. City officials said that there is no obligation to consult with the community because the site had been zoned for this kind of development in March 2013.
We, the undersigned residents of Observatory therefore:
1. Express our dismay at these developments and the lack of consultation;
2. Call on the City to hold off on approval pending an opportunity for the community to have a say;
3. Request that the relevant City officials meet with concerned residents of Observatory to seek resolution of this matter.
