Prescription pain medication is being abused at an astounding rate in the United States of America.
It was announced today by the Office of National Drug Control Policy that on an average day 2,500 kids are abusing a prescription painkiller for the first time, and many are becoming addicted.
In February of 2007 a study by the Center for Disease Control noted that between 1999 and 2004 there was a 68% increase in drug overdoses and deaths related to prescription medications.
We, the undersigned, call upon the Federal Government of the 50 states of the United States of America to require a national monitoring tool in order to track schedule II-IV prescription medications, similar to the one that is used to manage tracking by the FDA of food product origination, distribution and sale.
This tool would be used by health agencies and pharmacies in order to stop the possibility of people becoming addicted to these opiate derived drugs.
This monitoring tool would track agencies that are a point of distribution or sale for Schedule II-IV drugs inside the 50 states of America as well as those entering the United States of America from other countries.
This would exercise control of practices such as illegal distribution, on line pharmaceutical sales, prescription fraud, over prescribing, doctor shopping and theft at locations that store these drugs.
We call for immediate attention to this life threatening epidemic in order to protect our children, families and communities from a deadly trend of prescription medication abuse.
