Save Aldershot Town Centre!

London & Cambridge, in conjunction with Threadneedle, own and manage a significant amount of the retail space in Aldershot Town Centre and, along with retailers and residents, are concerned by Rushmoor Borough Council's plans to develop a large supermarket on an edge-of-town site. This will allow consumers to bypass the Town Centre seriously undermining the future vitality of Aldershot.

Rushmoor Borough Council has agreed to pursue a planning application for a 78,000 sq ft supermarket at Westgate in order to fund a cinema development on the site after their residential developer pulled out. We believe residential developers will look at the site again now that the housing market is improving.

As the two main landlords in Aldershot Town Centre, we support the cinema scheme but have very grave concerns that, if a supermarket is developed on the Westgate site, it will materially undermine the viability of retail in the town centre and destroy any regeneration opportunities.

There is a better alternative, which is to deliver a supermarket in the Town Centre at The Galleries Shopping Centre, which will bring shoppers into Aldershot rather than to an edge of town site.

As Rushmoor Borough Council is due to submit a planning application in the very near future we are looking to demonstrate to the Council that Aldershot's shoppers, residents and retailers have genuine and grave concerns over the effect the Westgate development will have, especially when there is a viable alternative solution available at The Galleries.
