Derbyshire Unemployed Workers' Centres (DUWCs) is an organisation established in the former coalfields area of North and East Derbyshire in the early 1980s as part of a TUC initiative to support people becoming unemployed.
The Centres opened offices throughout North Derbyshire as the excellent reputation of the organisation spread. In the current recessionary times the free, independent welfare rights advice provided is needed as much as ever.
We the undersigned petition Derbyshire County Council to reinstate its £35,000 annual funding to Derbyshire Unemployed Workers' Centres (DUWCs) in recognition, not just of the excellent service provided to disadvantaged local people, but also as a measure to stimulate growth for the local economy.
The £35,000 funding helps recover a total of approximately £1.8 million in under-paid welfare benefits, tax credits and lump sums won at Appeals Tribunals which is mostly spent on Derbyshire businesses and services.
