.Allotments are small parcels of land rented for nominal sums and used to grow fruits and vegetables for personal consumption. While demand for allotments has ebbed and flowed over the course of the twentieth century, it is now higher than at any time since WWII. In 2010, the national waiting list had reached 95,000 (Campbell and Campbell 2010), an increase of 17,000 from 2009.
This resurgence was led by concerns over methods of food production, health and nutritional issues, a desire not to lose any more urban green spaces to further development and the recognition of the need to create a more sustainable environment. Certainly they have developed from being a significant cultural heritage into an increasingly complex and dynamic part of contemporary life'.
As many of you are aware, there has been some speculation concerning Powys County Council building approximately 20 houses on the allotment site, situated on Llanidloes Road.
The allotment land was donated by Pryce Jones in 1919 in order for the next generations to grow home produce. Therefore much history lies within the soil that we now use to grow our fresh fruit and veg.
Currently we have 52 allotment holders, whom will all be affected by this housing development plan, along with many nearby residential home owners. Not only will our local community be affected, but so will our green spaces. We must do all that we can to protect them.
What right do Powys County Council have to sell community land?! Your support in signing our petition will help us save land that has been cultivated by the hands of our allotment holders for nearly 100 years.
