The government had initiated a slew of agent run hawker centres which has resulted in rents up to 100% higher. This has resulted in higher food prices, high turnover of stalls closing down due to the inability to service the rents and have scared off the new generation from being enterprenual hawkers and continuing our hawker culture.
We need to pressure the decision makers to step in and remove agency related costs and make hawker centres truly affordable for all.
We the undersigned request a review of the social enterprise hawker centre concept with the goal of making these new hawker centres truly affordable by reducing their rents and other costs.
The new committee should include veterans in the hawker scene; e.g KF Seetoh and Douglas Ng.
