Penns Mount, most of which is currently used to pasture sheep, is a prominent landscape feature at the head of the River Teign Estuary. Hitherto it has been protected from building.
It is highly visible from:
. the A380, especially southbound as you approach the Ware Barton turnoff,
. the Ware Barton roundabout,
. the A383 into Kingsteignton.
. the new footbridge at Newton Abbot,
. the new cycle path beside Newton Abbot racecourse,
. the historic Templar Way footpath along the river (in an Area of Great Landscape Value)
. Shaldon Road at Milber (in an Area of Great Landscape Value).
Locally, the proposed development of up to 250 houses and a park will alter the nature of Kingsteignton from a charming rural town to a characterless expanse of housing estates and business parks.
Overall, it will damage the amenity value of the Teign Estuary, a beautiful area much loved by both locals and visitors. Future generations will rue this mistake!
The Teignbridge Local Plan 2013-2033, which includes area KS6 (Penns Mount) for consideration as housing land, has not yet been submitted to the Planning Inspectorate - in fact the outline approval for 250 houses was granted on 10 December, 9 days before the deadline for Representations regarding the Proposed Submission version of the Plan.
We, the undersigned, call on Teignbridge District Council Spatial Planning and Delivery Team: to support inclusion of Penns Mount in the local Coastal Preservation Area and Areas of Great Landscape Value; to retract submission of KS6 as a possible housing area; and to rescind the outline planning permission granted to Eagle One Homes for up to 250 homes on Penns Mount.
