On Thursday, April 22,2004, Philadelphia, PA, Mayor John Street announced that money to fund 20 to 87 city pools and recreation centers are to be cut. Pleasant Playground is one of the recreation centers on the list to be closed by June 30, the end of the fiscal year.
Dear Mayor Street,
We the citizen of Philadelphia and concerned neighbors of Pleasant Playground are petitioning to keep Pleasant Playground open in its full capacity. We understand that you feel that closing recreation centers and pools will save money. Is saving money worth destroying the lively hood of the families of this city, our neighborhood? By closing Pleasant you may save money for now but you will be turning more people into the streets. By keeping our playground open, you will save more money in the long run. You will keep youth off the streets, bring families closer together and help in our efforts to produce world-class citizens. Please look at other ways to cut cost, perhaps including workers who live outside the Philadelphia and work here in the city wage tax. Think about it. Find another way.
Please keep Pleasant Playground open.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
