Potential closing of the Bailey Island, Maine 04003 Post Office
Bailey Island, Maine 04003
Ms Deborah Essler
District Manager
151 Forest Avenue
Portland, ME 04101
Dear Ms Essler:
We the citizens and customers of the Bailey Island Maine 04003 Post Office hereby protest any change in the present status of our post office.
It is our desire to retain our post office at its present status---a United States post office operated by a postmaster and career postal employees.
We have many concerns, among them the sanctity of the mail and the inconvenience that any change in the status of the Post Office could present to us in delivering and sending mail, particularly accountable mail. We are especially concerned over what effect closing the Bailey Island Office would have regarding the purchase of postal money orders. We are also well aware of the documented abuses possible through a contract mail station.
The Postal Reorganization Act of 1970 calls for providing a maximum degree of effective and regular postal service to rural areas, communities and small towns where post offices are not financially self sustaining. We feel your proposals do not meet these criteria!
The Bailey Island Post office must remain open and we do not approve of any proposal to change its status.
Sincerely,
Residents and Customers of Bailey Island, Maine Post Office 04003
