The Huntsman & Hounds Public House is a traditional local pub in a thriving social centre in East Walworth in South London. It is the only pub in the immediate neighbourhood and is linked closely with the shops & businesses on East Street.
We call on the local authorities to back our campaign to preserve this excellent local public house and support its designation as a community asset and its continued use as a meeting place for local people and the new populations moving into the area as a result of ongoing development. We ask too that the building is given protection from development so that it can remain as a core architectural feature in the local area.
The Huntsman pub supports three darts teams playing on three nights per week, hosting other south London teams (stretching from Crystal Palace to Wandsworth) as well as tournaments. The pub welcomes family parties and events because of its generous size, central and accessible location close to Elephant & Castle and offering affordable prices and party catering.
The community has particular interest in supporting the local ageing populations, families and single households and as such its presence and activities are an important cohesive presence within the local area. Engaged in raising money for charities through regular quiz nights and charity auctions, the community are also very open and accepting of new ideas about how to engage the whole community with the facilities at the Huntsman.
The area is undergoing significant change and development in the Aylesbury to the South and the Heygate to the North. The pub community believe that without a traditional pub and its large open spaces at the rear, there will be less opportunities for local people, including new residents to meet and develop the social support structures that are needed for the community to thrive. The loss of the pub to residential use will have a hugely detrimental effect on this community.
The pub building is of high architectural merit. The pub has an impressive façade and Victorian shop front which has remained relatively unchanged over time. Its huge flank walls built of London stock with brick banding enclose a generous backyard where bbqs are held and there is a trampoline . The pub is joined to 16 Tisdall Place, which from map research appears to be one of only 2 original houses that were built when the street was originally laid out between 1850 & 1879.
We the undersigned state that the Huntsman & Hounds Public House in Elsted St East Walworth SE17 is a valuable community asset and historic building which must be preserved.
We demand that any development of it keeps it as a public place where people can gather and this historic building is not demolished.
