San Francisco's historic Metro Theatre opened as the Metropolitan in 1924.
It was designed by prominent local architects the Reid Bros (Fairmont Hotel) and was the original home of the San Francisco International Film Festival - America's oldest international film festival.
The future of the Metro Theatre on Union Street is at risk. The Metro is one of San Francisco's best remaining neighborhood theatres and is a historic resource that should be preserved. It was recently renovated and has been a Union Street landmark for more than 80 years.
The property owner has now closed this theatre for strategic purposes despite offers to keep it open and operating. He now seeks to gut the theatre and replace it with a gym despite substantial offers to purchase the theatre and to continue its historic use.
We the undersigned believe that the Metro is an important community resource that should be preserved as a theatre and reopened for public use.
