Save the Old Stone Barracks - Plattsburgh, NY

We, the undersigned, call on the community members and all people concerned to agree with the concerns listed here. We want to see the Barracks and the surrounding property adaptively reused or preserved. Our concern is not simply for the building itself, but for the entire property, which has local, state, and national significance. Plans for the Barracks and surrounding property should honor and promote that historical significance.

Part of the importance of the Barracks and surrounding property is related to the military history of Plattsburgh. Altering the Barracks property will detract from the historic structure and dilute the heritage embodied by the oldest building on the former Air Force Base. We are proud of our military history, which dates back to the American Revolutionary War.

Another part of the importance of the Barracks and surrounding property is related to our local heritage. Numerous generations have come to identify the former Air Force Base and our connection to local history through the view of the Barracks from Route 9. Altering the Barracks property will significantly alter that view shed and change the way our physical history is presented and understood.
