A foreign investor from Canada is in the process of buying 70 acres of Land Parcel 0025B 4. Most of this beachfront parcel is located within The Pitons World Heritage Site in a No-Development Zone as agreed to by the Government of Saint Lucia (GOSL) in the original Hyder Report and the more recent Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC) report.
The buyer stated to us that he is buying the land as "a private beach for my wife..." Adding "I can get the Queen's Chain lease [Land Parcel 0025B 5]. It's cheap!"
The buyer, also, stated "I have a letter from the PM saying I can build in the World Heritage Site..." Adding "Oh, you know, a guest house for family, friends..."
The Buyer said he is buying the land on the condition that "all encumbrances" (local users: farmers, fishermen, tourists) are removed and asked us what is the best way to get rid of the locals on the beach...
We, the undersigned, call on the UNESCO World Heritage Site Committee, the Government of Saint Lucia (GOSL), the Development Control Authority (DCA) and the Commissioner of Crown Lands to deny the pending sale of 70+ acres of undeveloped beachfront land at Anse L'Ivrogne located in a No-Development Zone of The Pitons WHS - which, once again, risks putting Saint Lucia on UNESCO's List of Endangered World Heritage Sites - AND to complete the long-overdue Government of Saint Lucia "gazetted" transaction of this land parcel to ensure that Anse L'Ivrogne will forever remain the public property of all Saint Lucians NOT a private playground for a privileged few.
