Save Our Pub, The Roadhouse Hebburn.
Throughout the UK pubs are closing at a rate of approximately 16 a week. In towns across the country this is having a detrimental impact on the local community with the loss of employment and a social facility. In many areas the local pub is the heart of the community where residents meet to socialise; play pub games (darts, and pool) arrange meetings and catch up on local news day to day.
Not forgetting that our pub has played an important and essential role in supporting local charities in a number of fund raising events.
Our pub is the last public house still trading in the town centre, and as Hebburn is going through a period of improvement and development we think that the Roadhouse should be seen as an asset to the town. Which if developed would attract visitors, what vibrant town centre existed without its own public house where people can meet. As the council plan to demolish the Roadhouse with no plan to replaced it with anything we as a community feel that we can’t afford to lose this valued asset to the town.
The Roadhouse was first licensed in 1869 when it was the Hebburn Hall Hotel, later becoming the Argyle Hotel, the Ramada, and locally known as the Claps.
