United States of America

On July 4th, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence declaring that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and no longer part of the British Empire. This day has long been known as Independence Day. Historically, this important day has been celebrated in cities and towns across the country with parades, cook-outs, and community events which usually culminate with a fireworks display set to patriotic music.

The town of Wallingford had long funded and organized fireworks displays to celebrate the birth of our nation, drawing thousands of people, to the event every year, but made the decision to stop funding the event in 2009. The following year, several volunteers began raising the necessary funds to ensure that the fireworks display would continue, and for the past 6 years they have been very successful, keeping the patriotic tradition going every year.

Now, that tradition is once again in jeopardy. The group of volunteers can no longer make the commitment in time and effort necessary to ensure the continuation of the town fireworks and believe the town should once again take on the financial and organizational responsibility they relinquished in 2009.

We agree.

We, the undersigned, call on the Mayor and Town Council of the Town of Wallingford to make an adjustment to the town budget to ensure that the entire cost of the fireworks display is accounted for, not only for the upcoming holiday, but for each succeeding year as well.

This event brings our community together like no other, fostering civic pride and keeping our traditions going for our posterity.

It cannot be allowed to fade into the past.
