Teenagers aren't getting enough sleep. Teens need 8-10 hours of sleep every night which is more than what a child or an adult needs. Yet most adolescents only get about 6.5-7.5 hours of sleep per night which lead to chronic sleep deprivation. Adolescents who don't get enough sleep often suffer from physical and mental health problems, risk of automobile accidents, and a decline in academic performance. Getting additional sleep supports their developing brain, as well as physical growth spurts. It also helps protect against serious consequences like depression and drug abuse.
We, the students of Salem High, petition the school to start classes at 8;45 a.m. to give students a chance to get more sleep.
