Persons of Indian origin who have acquired Foreign citizenship are required to surrender their Indian Passports to the nearest Indian Mission immediately after acquisition of foreign citizenship. A fee of £90 for renouncing Indian citizenship/surrender of Indian passport is chargeable.
This is unfair and unlawful as the Indian Embassy should not force this upon those thousands who have taken up British citizenship and to those who are waiting to accept the British citizenship. The migrants are already reeling under pressure from the Home Office with the increase in all kinds of fees.
The Indian High Commission should retract the fee and keep the surrender free at least for a short period before they impose this fee.
We hereby request the Indian High Commission to withdraw the fees which is implemented for surrendering the Indian passport after acquiring British citizenship. The migrants are already reeling under the present economic climate and with the Home Office raising the fees for all its services.
The Indian High Commission should have at least acted lawfully as they brought this fee only when they realised the mistake they have made. This is unlawful and can be taken up in courts either in India or the UK.
