We are a group of concerned parents at Marengo Elementary School who want to demonstrate to our school board the urgent need to provide shade on our campus and other schools in the South Pasadena Unified School District.

It's a fact that exposure to UV sunlight, particularly during childhood, is the single greatest risk factor for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommends a number of actions for preventing skin cancer. Chief among them: Seek shade, especially during midday hours (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.), when UV rays are strongest and do the most damage and when most children are in school.

None of South Pasadena elementary school campuses provide sufficient amounts of shade to protect students from UV sunlight exposure. Marengo Elementary, in particular, is dominated by a large, open blacktop where students spend the majority of their time outdoors under direct sunlight. Such exposure places them at higher risk for skin cancer in later years.

We believe that SPUSD students deserve a safe learning environment, including one that protects them from the cancer-causing effects from exposure to UV sunlight.

Your signature on this petition will urge the South Pasadena Board of Education, the South Pasadena Unified School District and the South Pasadena Educational Foundation to provide appropriate shady areas on all school campuses.
