Senator John McCain is sponsoring S.3002, the "Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010". So far Senator Dorgan is the only cosponsor. This dubiously named bill will supposedly "protect consumers" from allegedly "unsafe" dietary supplements by creating a ton of unnecessary red tape- see: http://www.lef.org/featured-articles/Dietary-Supplement-Safety-Act-of-2010.htm S.3002 would gut the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, enabling the FDA to drive huge numbers of dietary supplement companies out of business.
The FDA has a well known public bias against dietary supplements and has a long history of acting as a Trade Association for Big Pharma. Congress must not give them unfettered ability to attack the industry when they (and the DEA) already have ample enforcement powers to keep illegal steroids from being sold as "dietary supplements."
To All Members of Congress: If you make the mistake of cosponsoring S.3002, the Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010, the undersigned dietary supplement consumers, having read, and agreeing with the information at http://www.lef.org/featured-articles/Dietary-Supplement-Safety-Act-of-2010.htm, will do everything in their power to make sure you don't get reelected.
We vow to hand this issue to anyone running against you, urging them to take up the banner of health freedom, should you make this mistake. The FDA already has more than ample enforcement power to keep illegal steroids from being marketed as "dietary supplements". Congress must make sure they do their job, not hand them power that they would simply abuse as shills of Big Pharma.
FDA has a long history of bias against dietary supplements. S.3002 would gut the Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA). You must realize that the campaign to pass DSHEA generated the largest flood of mail to congress on any issue in the HISTORY of Congress, and you will commit political suicide if you cosponsor S.3002!!
