Canada Post is installing community mailboxes everywhere in Canada. In their haste to complete these installations, they are ignoring the rights to privacy, property, and safety of every resident.
The residents of these affected communities have local knowledge; we understand how these boxes will affect our safety, our traffic patterns, our aesthetics, and we insist that Canada Post interface with all residents concerning the placement of these boxes. Further, no resident in any community should be forced, against their will, to have these boxes installed on their property, be it private or easement.
These boxes are commercial units and as such have no place on quiet residential streets, especially where there are no sidewalks and traffic will increase at all hours as people retrieve their mail. Increased traffic causes an increased risk of accidents and young children and seniors are most especially at risk.
We, the undersigned, call on the Federal Government and Canada Post to stop the infringement on citizens' property and privacy, and further to stop installing mail boxes anywhere but on through streets, parking lots, at the entrance to parks, and on boulevards with sidewalks.
Further, these boxes should be placed as unobtrusively as possible so that no resident has their view negatively impacted by the site of these boxes.
