Stop Cell Phone Use While Driving

Indiana's current law restricts persons under the age of 18 from cell phone use while driving. I do not believe this this law is adequate enough to protect and ensure the safety of drivers on the road. An adult is no more capable of using a cell phone while driving than a teenager. I believe that texting as well as any kind of phone use, including hands free devices, should be banned for all drivers.

Using your cell phone while driving isn’t an issue based on coordination and how well you can drive with one hand, it’s about your brain thinking about what you’re doing on your phone instead of the road. An article posted by Time Magazine in 2009 states that when our brain tunes into sounds, aka the person you are talking to on the telephone, the visual part of our brain becomes less active.

David Strayer, a scientist and psychologist professor who has been studying the effects of cell phone use and driving for more than a decade, conducted a simulator study that revealed that a driver with a 0.08 blood-alcohol content was more likely to brake quicker and cause fewer accidents than a sober person talking on the phone. If drinking and driving is illegal, then using your cell phone while driving should be as well, for ALL people!
