Stop Deep Borehole Drilling In Pierce County, North Dakota to explore storing any form of nuclear or radioactive waste.

TO: Pierce County Board of Commissioners, Pierce County Planning & Zoning Commission, ND Department of Trust Lands, ND Industrial Commission

WHEREAS, the Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC) has requested permission from the North Dakota Department of Trust Lands to enter upon its land located in central Pierce County, North Dakota, to determine whether “deep bore” drilling is a suitable alternative for the disposal of spent nuclear waste;

WHEREAS, the proposed project involves drilling more than 3.1 miles into the earth with the intention of making holes large enough to experiment with the placement, sealing and retrieval of waste;

WHEREAS, preserving the natural resources of Pierce County and the State of North Dakota, and protecting the lives and well being of the residents of Pierce County and the State of North Dakota can be helped by signing this petition

NOW, THEREFORE, the undersigned adult residents of North Dakota call on the support and efforts of the recipients of this petition (e.g., Pierce County and State of North Dakota) to (a) deny all stages (i.e., including initial exploratory stages) of “deep bore” drilling and (b) establish permanent planning and zoning ordinance and state legislation to stop such activity so as to prevent even the possibility of nuclear or radioactive waste disposal for any length of time in Pierce County and the entire State of North Dakota.
