On the 10th of February 2020 Liverpool council plan to bait the region of Holsworthy Military base and surrounds with the chemical 1080.
This chemical is proven to be deadly to any living thing that stumbles upon it being highly toxic to humans, livestock and pets. The council has aimed its guns at “wild dogs” - Dingoes and foxes.
For more information on the Dingo population within NSW see: https://theconversation.com/dingoes-found-in-new-south-wales-but-were-killing-them-as-wild-dogs-126184
Regardless of their category being that of a “pest”, these animals are living, breathing beings.
The council warns to keep pets inside knowing full well that this chemical will lead to a slow and agonising death.
My sole aim is to collect as many signatures as possible prior to February 3rd.
Once collected I will be presenting them before Liverpool council with a demand to put a halt to the baiting.
I hope to also present a humane alternative to their “requirement” to bait these gorgeous creatures and save as many lives as possible.
Sodium fluoroacetate, more commonly known as 1080, is a poison that is being extensively used in Australia to control ‘pest’ species. 1080 is inhumane, as it causes a prolonged, uncomfortable death. It prevents the body’s muscles and organs from absorbing energy, resulting in failure of the lungs and heart, with a death typically lasting between 8-24 hours for birds and 2-4 days for large mammals. During this time, animals endure vomiting, screaming fits, drooling, seizures, frenzied behaviour, and uncontrolled paddling.
This poison is not selective and there is no antidote, subjecting un-targeted species to this painful death. The use of this poison to date, has resulted in hundreds of deaths to non-target victims, including companion dogs and native animals, reptiles, invertebrates, and amphibians, who consume the bait or eat the flesh of poisoned animals, as these bodies remain poisonous until they are completely decomposed.
