The introduction of polling station based voters roll is open to abuse by political parties who will use this to intimidate or victimise voters if polling does not go in their favour. Since a polling station has fewer voters on its roll than a ward it would be much easier to identify those who would have cast their vote and how they would have voted.
Recent Norton by-election is a case in point. There was rampant intimidation and threats from senior party politicians. What will happen if those who have high hopes to win lose? Some parties are yet to embrace democratic practices especially in the rural areas where divergent views are not tolerated. The "sellout" mantra is still being used 36 years after the end of the war.
We the undersigned call on the Parliament of Zimbabwe to remove the provision of polling station based voters' roll in the Electoral Act so that voters are protected after polling.
