A rare earth plant to process rare earth concentrates is scheduled to begin production in September 2011 in Gebeng, Kuantan, Malaysia. It is a joint collaboration between Malaysian government and Lynas Corporation, Australia.
Kuantan is a city which boasts of many beautiful beaches and is a home to abundant sea creatures. With the highly radioactive and hazardous project coming its way, it is probable that Kuantan will lose its natural beauty and attractions. Not to mention, exposure to radioactive waste can be fatal, the effects could last for generations. There is also high possibility that new born babies could be affected by radiation if their parents have been exposed to it. Many residents who live nearby to the plant are protesting to this project but their cries have not been heard.
While the government is trying to convince the people of the low radiation exposure, there is no known way of safely disposing the radioactive wastes which leads to endangering public health and destroying the surrounding environment.
Taking into account the seriousness of the risks involved in running such a plant, we urge Lynas Corporation and the Malaysian federal government to stop this project.
Kuantan, Malaysia will not be used as another country's waste dumping ground!
We, the undersigned, call on Lynas Corporation to abandon Rare Earth Plant Project in Gebeng, Kuantan, Malaysia.
