We reject the current plans to build a monument to John Newton, a slaver, as part of the slave routes project. Saint Kitts is an African-Caribbean majority country with numerous African heroes to celebrate and cast monuments to. The erecting of this monument is an insult to so many great Africans who have died and suffered under the yoke of slavery and is tantamount to blasphemy.
It re-institutionalizes the horrors created by slavery and white supremacy. People must source heroes from their own narrative and not those of the people who inflicted these terrible crimes against humanity.
Not only do we want the cessation of plans to erect the monument to this slaver. We ask for a review of the media and educational system in the island, where the history books and African media is offered in the school system. Thus putting an end to the current racist Eurocentric version of the African reality.
A small Baptist church in St. Kitts has been convinced by white missionaries using the film Amazing Grace to set up a monument to John Newton who came there to sell slaves and later, at a different stage in his life, turned Christian abolitionist.
Saint Kitts is an African-Caribbean majority country with numerous African heroes to celebrate and cast monuments to. The European made film Amazing Grace is being used as a tool of brainwashing the people with no concept of their own history. These films have the primary purpose of conquering African history and inserting the White Tarzan as the saviors of African people. The power of images, the power of the White Jesus in the church, the poor education of self, are all contributing factors.
Films such as 500 Years Later made by Africans which give accurate African-centered accounts of slavery and numerous books written by conscious Africans are nowhere to be found in the Caribbean. These African voiced projects are not broadcasted in African majority islands such as St Kitts but the likes of Amazing Grace are. The school system still relies on Eurocentric curricula material to continue the legacy of inferiority and dependency.
It is a dishonor to the memory of our ancestors to allow this white washed revisionist self-serving history to dominate our lives. It is an insult to African agency. John Newton associations with the abolitionists may or may not have been heartfelt but his association with the Caribbean and with Sandy point, St Kitts, in particular was as a slaver. We have too many African heroes that deserve our memories.
