Our world is awash with weapons which are used mainly to kill civilians. The arms trade is riddled with corruption as instanced by the Scott Inquiry into British arms sales to Saddam Hussein.
The Asia Pacific Defence and Security Exhibition, Adelaide, November 11-13, will showcase the latest killing, surveillance and crowd control technology. The Asia-Pacific/Australia region is unique in showing an increase in defence expenditure as percentage of GDP between1994 – 2006.
It is forecast to overtake Europe and the Middle East as the largest defence market. A$131 billion (US$104 billion) of defence projects is scheduled in the next decade. Australia will spend A$31 billion (US$25 billion) over the next 10 years on defence projects.
We, the undersigned, call on the South Australian Government to cancel the Australia Pacific Defence and Security Exhibition and to seek alternative strategies for economic development which further the common good.
