Cutting-edge medical advances and innovative technologies have made headlines and continue to flourish in the new millennium. However, these medical achievements stand in stark contrast to the paradoxical increase in US maternal mortality, which is among the highest of all developed nations. Globally, the MMR was 282 in 1990 and decreased to 196 in 2015, falling by 30%. In contrast, the US MMR rose from 16.9 in 1990 to 26.4 in 2015, climbing more than 56%. At first glance, these numbers may look low, but these increases mean that the US is 1 of only 20 nations worldwide, 12 of which are in sub-Saharan Africa, where that has occurred. Currently, the United States has a higher MMR than nations such as Iran, Syria, Ukraine, and Jamaica.
We, the undersigned, call on members of the United States Senate and the House of Representatives to bring H.R.1318 and S.1112 - the Preventing Maternal Deaths Act of 2017 - to the floor of the Congress for consideration. This legislation, which has bipartisan support in both houses of Congress, would establish grant programs for the allocation of funds to conduct research on maternal mortality rates and support the individual states as they develop their own programs to address issues related to maternal death.
