Support Off Leash Hours for Mungabareena Reserve

In May 2011 Albury City Council erected two prominent signs at the entrance to Mungabareena Reserve warning of a $220 on the spot fine for dogs off leash. For years “Mungab” has been widely recognised as a very dog friendly reserve.

Regularly, numerous dogs can be seen enjoying the open space and easy access to the Murray River, without the restraint of a leash.

Dog owners generally display respect and awareness of other dogs and people using the reserve with incidents between dogs or other visitors very unusual. Furthermore, a regular group has emerged who often spend time collecting rubbish left by other visitors whilst their dogs explore and socialise.

This petition seeks some flexibility in the restrictions applied to the uses of this public amenity.

Why Mungabareena Reserve?

“Mungab” is unmatched in the Albury / Wodonga area for the following reasons;
• Easy access to the river for people and pets with the bend in the river suited to swimming
• Flat safe walking for older people and young families
• Away from traffic and residential areas;
• Existing bins to allow for rubbish / waste disposal;
• Well-grassed open spaces with ample room to accommodate many people.

This petition seeks the introduction of morning and afternoon off leash times. Whilst there are certainly other off leash areas in Albury none provide the unique combination of easy access to the river, space, amenities and a sense of seclusion whilst being so central to the Albury community.
