Following the recent heavy snow, and walking to the shop in my town with silent deserted roads it occurred to me that life was far more peaceful and pleasant without the traffic. Everyone spoke to each other and helped their neighbours.
There was chaos throughout the country with people trying to drive on roads that were mostly impassable. I do not live in cloud cuckoo land but surely we can manage one day a year when we (excluding emergencies) can cope without cars. Therefore, on the holiday to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton and on subsequent anniversaries of same,I propose we should have a traffic free day (apart from emergency vehicles) when we can walk, cycle or horseride without the noise and fumes surrounding our everyday lives.
Apart from the impressive impact this will have on reducing carbon emissions, street parties could be held and events could take place in a true celebration of the beauty of the land we live in. What about a relay marathon around the M25?
Some people will need to get to work and so I imagine it being between the hours of, say 8am to 8pm, with those working starting early and finishing late and getting extra time off in lieu. No doubt imaginative ways of getting to work will evolve.
We the undersigned call on the government to declare the wedding day of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and subsequent anniversaries of this day to be a day free of all traffic other than emergency vehicles between the hours of 8am and 8pm.
Further the government should promote events and street parties on these days in celebration of the beautiful country in which we live.
