The fenced off area along the waterfront at the intersection of Beach Channel Drive and Rockaway Freeway is public land. It has been neglected by the city for as long as anyone living in Rockaway can remember and is in complete disrepair.
The area remains as one of Rockaway's most active fishing spots but is very dangerous as there are large stones and scraps of metal sticking out of the broken concrete and as there are no guard rails preventing fisherman from falling onto the rocks below.
The benefits of a park in this location would greatly out weight the costs of this endeavor for the city as this area is small. Please sign this petition below to help give the Rockaway community the beautiful bay front park it deserves.
We, the undersigned, call on The NYC Mayor's Office and the NYC Parks Department to convert the public land along Jamaica Bay at the intersection of Beach Channel Drive and Rockaway Freeway into a public park for the Rockaway fishing community.
