Honorable President Kibaki and Minister of Agriculture Sally Kosgei. We are very concerned bout the presence of Monsanto in our country.
We witnessed the situation in India where farmers have to buy the Bolgar Cotton seeds from Monsanto at a four times higher price. If the harvest is poor that means bancruptcy, because farmers have to turn to money lenders who charge high interest rates.
We do not want to see Kenya going down the same road. We do not want our food supplies being controlled by a foreign corporation.
We the undersigned are using our democratic right to send this petition to you. Our great concern is the presence of Monsanto in Kenya.
Monsanto is a global corporation who is selling genetically modified seeds, food, fertilizers etc. This in the long run will lead to total dependence on this global player.
We have witnessed the situation in India, where farmers have to buy the seeds from Monsanto at a four time higher price in order to plant Bolgar Cotton. Because of this Indian farmers have to turn to money lenders who charge very high interest rates. Should the harvest be poor that means bankruptcy for the farmers. This development has lead to farmers committing suicide in record numbers.
Also, the genetically modified seeds lead to the loss of our biodiversity, which we would like to preserve for future generations. We strongly believe that what nature puts out for us is the best for human health.
In short, we are fully aware that this development will be leading to the total control of our food supplies by a foreign corporation. Once our farmers can no longer compete with this multi national, Monsanto will be the only one who sets the price for our food. This is putting our lives on the line. The one who is controlling the food will be controlling the people, and we do not want to be controlled by a foreign company.
Monsanto has been known for giving generous donations to governments. But we elected you to protect us from any harm, no matter who is trying to inflict on us. We did not elect you to protect the special interests of foreign corporations.
What we demand is: Tell Monsanto to leave Kenya.
Stand strong with us the people of this precious country against corporate takeover of our food supplies and food tyranny. Stand with us for a free Kenya and against the global elite.
