Prescription dog and cat food is not really a prescription. It is a hype to get paid by dog and cat food companies. Read the ingredients does it contain animal and chicken byproducts or soybean (other than soybean oil).

Veterinarians have little knowledge in what is in dog and cat food. Please do a Google search for “What is in dog food.

I recommend that Veterinarians disclose their involvement in the companies in what they want you buy, at a high price, and what they get in monetary and free dog and cat food.

Since the recent recall of pet foods, I find pet parents thinking of their pets as children. I have lost both. There is no comparison as I have lost both; our dogs and cats s are not children dressed up in furry customs. While some vets can specialize in certain areas like nutrition, which require hours of research and practical work the average vet has 3-5 hours of nutrition studies per semester a typical veterinary medical student spends about 4,000 hours in classroom, laboratory, and clinical study. That's a lot of education, and without specializing, very little of it is on food. So why do so many people exclusively trust their vet's opinion? If they sell it how much can they trust their opinion?

They are professionals and are devoted to the care of our pets but are sorely lacking when it comes to a pet's diet. Why is 'dried' well? These are pre-cooked recipes. Meal is always better. For example 5 pound of chicken the water removed becomes one pound of chicken meal. Because the ingredients list on the back of the bag is listed proportionally by weight, and water is heavy, pre-cooked. You want the 'good' ingredients to be towards the top of the list. And stuff you're getting for the weight. (Chicken and or any other meat or poultry without meal drop down to at least the 5th ingredient in the final product. Everything is pre-weight recipes. If you get some garbage ingredients further down the list, it's less of a problem than if it's near the top, the reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. One last note: Avoid byproducts. One of the dirty little secrets kept by the pet food industry is that some by-products also contain substances such as abscesses and cancerous material. In my opinion, feeding slaughterhouse wastes to animals increases their chances of getting cancer and other degenerative diseases. Some meat, especially glandular tissue, may contain high levels of hormones, which may also cause serious health problems including cancer. Supermarkets that sell pet food sell the lowest grade of dog and cat food.

Avoid Animal Digest, artificial flavors and colors. BHT. Animal and poultry MUST be in meal format for kibble or you lose75% due to water weight. Just move it down in the finished weight to the 6th or 7th Ingredient

Most people ask their Vet about what to feed their pet; they usually respond that they will feed whatever the vet recommends. Vets can be such a great source for so much information but not every vet knows what is best for every dog. A lot of vets will recommend certain pet food but that does not mean you should run out and buy a bag of a certain dog or cat food

Some companies are a very large contributor to most vet schools in the country. Their food is practically given to the vets. Since the vets know this label often immediately recommend it as the best such subliminal marketing during their veterinary school days cannot be forgotten easily Please avoid-products are of questionable nutrition, containing heads tails feet eyeballs, nails, etc things that definitely dont contain easily digestible proteins .

Dry pet food, kibble, should not say meat or fish products that do not say they are meal. The ingredient list is before it is processed. The water has to be removed. Although chicken may be listed first it may drop to the 3rd or 4th ingredient in the finished process. Chicken meal or lamb meal, etc. has already been processed and will remain as the first ingredient.

I recommend avoiding:

Ground corn (Corn also is high in carbohydrates which is something dogs stomachs are not adept at handling and the high amount of carbs also cause your beloved companion to put on weight.)

Our pets cannot read labels. It is up to us to read the labels and do what is best for them. True premium dog and cat foods will never contain these ingredients.

So I suggest we expel everything we know about dog food, forget about the pretty labels and the fancy words and pretty pictures of veggies and choice cuts of meat (often exaggerated and not shown true size) and turn the bag/can over to read the ingredients. If you were going to feed something to your kids, wouldnt you turn it around and read the list of ingredients?

Dogs and cats are looking for an Alpha (leader); they are pack animals.

We must control their eating habits and not let them control their owners. Please do not humanize them.
