Thisvians Against the Environmental Destruction of our Lands

English Translation (with Greek following Below)

As loyal and responsible citizens and descendants of the region of Thisvi (Δήμος Θίσβης) we have taken it upon ourselves to make this proclamation against the imminent catastrophe that our lands will be subject to. It is our responsibility and duty to state our stance against this situation.

The following are statements of our combined voice of petition:

1. WE DEMAND that our region (Municipality of Thisvi) be declassified as an Industrial Area with the revocation of all laws and the decisions that permit its operation.

2. WE DEMAND that the construction of the Electricity Producing Power Plant, fueled by natural gas, be stopped IMMEDIATELY. It will pollute the local area with countless tons of noxious chemicals for decades to come. Its position in a valley surrounded by mountains will prevent any effective ventilation, creating a permanent cloud of chemicals and carcinogens which will be disastrous to the local population - and beneficial to few, who will be far from this catastrophe.

3. WE DEMAND that every procedure meant for the establishment of new industrial structures and operational facilities must be stopped immediately

4. WE DEMAND that the necessity for the establishment of an industrial zone be reexamined in its entirety by conducting a study on the General Land Plan of the region – a study that will examine the REAL needs of the area, NOT OF THE ENTREPRENEURS

5. WE DEMAND a Comprehensive Study be conducted on the environmental repercussions on the region due to the local industrial operations (Industrial Factories, The Port of Vathi, and the Motorway/Railroad); a study that will be part of a broader survey conducted on Southern Boeotia. An examination, in its entirety, concerning the Industrial Zone of Thisbe, the port at Vathi, the wind turbine farm on Mount Elikon, as well as the Industrial Zone of Antikyra.

6. WE ABSOLUTELY DEMAND WITHOUT COMPROMISE that the illegal port operating in Vathi be stopped immediately. It is operating without any precautions towards the marine wildlife, or our health. It is one of the greatest dangers to our area and the local environment. Its role is totally contrary and destructive to the existing tourist and recreational activities and fisheries of the ENTIRE CORINTHIAN GULF.

7. WE DEMAND that the operation of the Corinthian Pipeworks Factory must be reexamined. The unit must be held accountable to regulations, as well as take responsibility for the protection of the local environment. The working rights of its employees must also be examined.

We, the residents and friends of the Municipality of Thisvi from all parts of the world, (who sign this petition) express with this resolution our contrary stance to the actions of certain players, who without any planning and while ignoring entirely the local community, proceeded to create and develop a commercial port in the Corinthian Gulf, and more specifically in the Bay of Noussas located in the Gulf of Domvrainas. The port here – including a special Customs regime and many ancillary facilities - will receive dozens of polluting merchant ships daily.

Having witnessed and experienced similar ports from abroad, we believe that both the maritime environment in the Gulf of Domvraina, and the rest of Corinthian Gulf are severely threatened with significant pollution. In addition, the operation of the port destroys any prospect for moderate and sustainable development in agriculture, fisheries and tourism in the region. The port would transform the beautiful beaches of Aliki, St. Nikolaos and St. Ioannis into industrial dumps - such as those that already exist in Aspropyrgos and Elefsina.

Through your mutual interest and your sensitivity towards environmental protection, quality of life and sustainable development of our country, we hope you agree with us that the operation of the port creates a very dirty and dark future for the residents of the Municipality of Thisvi, in the prefecture of Boeotia, but also of other prefectures who border the Gulf of Corinth. We hope that you will contribute to the overall efforts made so that our region can escape the threat of imminent regret.

1). Απαιτούμε να αποχαρακτηριστεί τώρα η περιοχή μας από Βιομηχανική (ΒΙ.ΠΕ.) με την ακύρωση όλων των νόμων και των αποφάσεων που επιτρέπουν την λειτουργία της.

2) Ζητάμε η κατασκευή του εργαστασίου παρασκευής ηλεκτρού ρεύματος που θα χρησιμοποιεί φυσικο αερίο να σταματήσει αμέσως. Θα ρυπαίνει την τοπική περιοχή, με αμέτρητους τόνους τοξικών χημικών ουσιών για χρόνια. Τη θέση του σε μια κοιλάδα που περιβάλλεται από βουνά, δεν θα βοηθήσει αποτελεσματικά κανένα σύστημα εξαερισμού, δημιουργώντας ένα μόνιμο σύννεφο χημικών και καρκινογόνων ουσιών που θα είναι καταστροφικά για τον τοπικό πληθυσμό, και το άμεσο περιβάλλον - και επωφελές για τούς λίγους, που θα είναι μακριά από αυτήν την επερχόμεμη περιβαλλοντική καταστροφή.

3). Να σταματήσει τώρα κάθε διαδικασία εγκατάστασης νέων Βιομηχανικών Μονάδων

4). Να επανεξεταστεί συνολικά όλο το θέμα της αναγκαιότητας δημιουργίας ΒΙ.ΠΕ., με το να εκπονηθεί η μελέτη Γενικού Χωροταξικού Σχεδιασμού της περιοχής, που θα εξετάζει τις πραγματικές ανάγκες του τόπου μας.

5). Να γίνει παράλληλα, συγκεντρωτική μελέτη περιβαλλοντικών επιπτώσεων στην περιοχή από το σύνολο των τοπικών έργων (Βιομηχανίες, Λιμάνι, Δρόμος ), που ν’ αποτελέσουν τμήμα ευρύτερης μελέτης, τουλάχιστον της Νότιας Βοιωτίας. Να εξεταστεί δηλαδή συνολικά το θέμα: ΒΙ.ΠΕ. Θίσβης – Λιμάνι – Δρόμος – Ανεμογεννήτριες Ελικώνα – ΒΙ.ΠΕ. Αντίκυρας.

6). Να κλείσει τώρα το λιμάνι. Γιατί λειτουργεί χωρίς καμιά προστασία για τον πλούτο της θάλασσας και της υγείας μας. Γιατί αποτελεί το μεγαλύτερο κίνδυνο καταστροφής της περιοχής και ο ρόλος του είναι παντελώς αντίθετος με τις υπάρχουσες δραστηριότητες του παραθερισμού, της αναψυχής και της αλιείας.

7). Να εξεταστεί πως λειτουργεί μέχρι σήμερα η Σωληνουργεία, αν τηρούνται οι κανονισμοί προστασίας του περιβάλλοντος και ποιες είναι οι συνθήκες δουλειάς και τα δικαιώματα των εργαζομένων σε αυτήν.

Εμείς, οι κάτοικοι και φίλοι του Δήμου Θίσβης από όλα τα μέρη του κόσμου, (που υπογράφουμε το παρακάτω κείμενο) εκφράζουμε με αυτό το ψήφισμα την αντίθεση μας στις ενέργειες των φορέων, οι οποίοι χωρίς κανέναν σχεδιασμό και αγνοώντας παντελώς την τοπική κοινωνία, προχώρησαν στην δημιουργία και την ανάπτυξη ενός «διαμετακομιστικού» λιμανιού στον Κορινθιακό Κόλπο, και πιο συγκεκριμένα στον όρμο της Νούσας που βρίσκεται μέσα στον κόλπο της Δομβραίνας. Το λιμάνι αυτό - ειδικού τελωνιακού καθεστώτος και με πλήθος βοηθητικών εγκαταστάσεων - θα δέχεται καθημερινά τον ελλιμενισμό δεκάδων ρυπογόνων εμπορικών πλοίων.
Εχοντας υπόψη, την εμπειρία που υπάρχει από ανάλογα λιμάνια στο εξωτερικό, πιστεύουμε, ότι τόσο η θαλάσσια περιοχή που βρίσκεται στον κόλπο της Δομβραίνας, όσο και ο υπόλοιπος Κορινθιακός κόλπος απειλούνται με σημαντική ρύπανση. Επιπλέον, με την λειτουργία του λιμανιού ακυρώνεται κάθε προοπτική για ήπια και βιώσιμη ανάπτυξη, στους τομείς της γεωργίας, της αλιείας και του τουρισμού στην περιοχή. Το λιμάνι αυτό θα μετατρέψει, τις όμορφες παραλίες της Αλυκής, του Αγίου Νικολάου και του Αγίου Ιωάννη σε βιομηχανικές «χαβούζες» όπως αυτές που ήδη υπάρχουν στον Ασπρόπυργο και την Ελευσίνα.

Επικαλούμενοι το ενδιαφέρον και την ευαισθησία σας για την προστασία του περιβάλλοντος, την ποιότητα ζωής των πολιτών και της βιώσιμης ανάπτυξης του τόπου μας, ελπίζουμε να συμφωνήσετε μαζί μας, ότι η λειτουργία του λιμανιού αυτού δημιουργεί ένα ιδιαίτερα απαισιόδοξο μέλλον για τους κατοίκους του Δήμου Θίσβης, του Νομού Βοιωτίας αλλά και των υπόλοιπων νομών οι οποίοι βρέχονται από τον Κορινθιακό κόλπο. Ελπίζουμε ότι θα συμβάλλετε και εσείς στην συνολική προσπάθεια που καταβάλλεται προκειμένου η περιοχή μας να απαλλαγεί από την επερχόμενη δυσάρεστη απειλή.
