On Monday, January 30, 2017 Mr. Vendiz Charles was formally charged by the police with attempted murder. This charge stems from an incident where the Clare Hall Secondary freshman teacher threw a stone which struck a student on the head. The statements offered by those who witnessed the event, as well as a video recording of the incident clearly indicate that there was no malice in the teacher's action. In fact, the teacher's presence with the child at the hospital following the incident was also indicative of his deep sense of concern and remorse over what transpired. The A&BUT and the entire community wishes the student a safe and speedy recovery.
We the undersigned, having due respect for the rule of law, and confidence in the ability of law enforcement to objectively investigate complaints, are left bewildered at the extent of the charge that has been laid against our colleague,
Mr. Vendiz Charles. As a consequence, we call on the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Honourable Attorney General to amend or drop the charge of Attempted Murder against Mr. Charles.
