Barclays and the Barclays English Premier League (EPL), in pursuance of its #YouAreFootball global campaign, put up a television advert meant to thank loyal followers around the world.

The advert showed an African boy (with his father/guardian) wade through dusty roads, stressfully searching for a bus to the city to catch an EPL football game.

The experience on the dusty, non-tarred road, added to the torture of standing in a bus whose seats were already filled, portrayed Africans' suffering and poverty, and the decreased productivities and efficiencies that poor transportation bring. This is racist, considering that other races, in this same advert, were not portrayed as such, and given that a lot of Africa is on the rise, and the continent's economy is booming.

We, the undersigned, call on Barclays bank, The Barclays English Premier League (EPL), and The Football Association to take down the #YouAreFootball television advert that showed an African boy (and his father/guardian) wade through tedious, stressful and dusty roads, to catch an EPL game, in a way that depicted African poverty and weak transportation systems in comparison with those of other races in that same advert.

We believe this advert is racist, and that Africa and Africans deserve an apology from Barclays bank, The Barclays English Premier League, and The Football Association.
