It is important that Governor Gavin Newsom support expanding rent control to alleviate the incredible cost burden put on renters in California;
* Over 1/2 of renters in CA are rent burdened, paying over 30% of income on rent
* Zillow study found a 5% average rent increase in Los Angeles would mean 2,000 more people falling into homelessness
*California has 30% of the nation's homeless population. Over 171,000 people are homeless in the State of California
We, the undersigned, urge Governor Newsom to support expanding rent control in California. California has the highest number of rent burdened tenants in the entire country. There is a strong connection between escalating rents and growing numbers of people experiencing homelessness. There are over 171,000 people who are homeless in the state of California. While people struggle to pay the rent, corporate developer landlords are amassing billions in profits. Expanding rent control is necessary to address the housing affordability crisis.
