Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world;
Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people;
Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law;
Whereas as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana provides for the Fundamental Human Rights and Freedoms of every person in Ghana in Articles 12-16 and also invoking the spirit of UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS by the General Assembly of the United Nations.
NOW, THEREFORE We are Calling on the President whom POWER has bestowed upon through the Government of Ghana to Clamp down on all persons operating these secluded villages called "WITCHES CAMPS" and immediately closing all those camps permanently.
Again we are calling on the Government of Ghana to integrate the poor inmates to normal community life thereby restoring their human dignity.
WE ARE TARGETING AT LEAST 1,500,000 SIGNATURES ACROSS THE GLOBE. WE WILL SEND THIS PETITION TO PRESIDENCY, CHRAJ, THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS, UNITED NATIONS, HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS, POLITICIANS, RELIGIOUS AND TRADITIONAL COUNCILS, AND THE PRESS.
We the members of CHARTER FOR FREEDOM AND HUMAN RIGHTS, GHANA believes that The 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana provides for the Fundamental Human Rights and Freedoms of every person in Ghana. Every person in Ghana, whatever the race, place of origin, political opinion, religion, creed or gender shall be entitled to the fundamental human rights and freedoms of the individual contained in the Constitution but subject to respect for the rights and freedoms of others and for the public interest.
Constitutional rights include:
* The Right to Life
* The Right to Personal Liberty
* Rights of the Child
* Women's Rights
* Freedom from Discrimination
* Rights of the Disabled
* Economic Rights
* Political Rights
* The Police and Right to Liberty
* The Respect for Human Dignity
* Protection from Slavery and Forced Labour.
We have empirical evidence that some group of persons are abusing the rights of women both old and young and dehumanizing treatment are meted out to them for their classification as "WITCHES" in the following areas Ngani, Kukuo and Gambaga all in the Northern Region and some other Regions of Ghana.
We strongly demand from International Human Rights Organizations, United Nations Human Rights Council, Non-Governmental Organizations, All Political Parties across the divide, All Religious and Traditional Councils and all well meaning Ghanaians to appeal to the Government of Ghana in CLOSING DOWN PERMANENTLY ALL "WITCH CAMPS" IN GHANA.
