Petition Against Racist, Sexist, Ageist Comments by Federal MP Linda Burney

Linda Burney is an elected member of the House of Representatives in the Australian Federal Parliament.

She has been democratically elected to represent all her constituents regardless of their gender, race, colour or age. This should be an honour and a privilege, not a platform for abuse.

On 8 November 2016, Ms Burney made public comments designed to offend, humiliate, insult, intimidate, silence and discriminate against her constituents, and other Australians and their political views, based on their age, gender and skin colour.

Ms Burney stated publicly to reporters, "It astounds me that the people that are advocating for the removal of 18C are basically white men of a certain age that have never experienced racial discrimination in their life..."

Many people with pale skin face racist comments from non-whites daily, on the basis of their skin colour, including these recent comments by Ms Burney.

It is shameful that Ms Burney would target people of white skin to make an untrue political point. It is worse that she does so in a position of privilege funded by many of the people she has targeted.

We call upon Ms Linda Burney to apologise for, and to retract, her offensive comments and to give an assurance she will refrain from making racist, sexist and ageist comments in future.
