The American government has not responded adequately to the grievous human rights abuses associated with the Bahraini government crackdown on the democratic opposition.
The impression given is one of cynical hypocrisy and inconsistency on human rights and democracy promotion.
This undermines the legitimacy that President Obama is working to establish for the United States in the region, and offers the Islamic Republic of Iran an opportunity to project influence into the Gulf.
Dear President Obama: We, the undersigned, implore you to take bold and decisive action to support human rights in Bahrain, oppose the Al-Khalifa dynasty in their efforts to crush peaceful protest, publicly and emphatically condemn the extensive use of torture by Bahraini intelligence and security forces, refuse pressure from the Saudi to retard the development of democracy in Bahrain, and insist that the government cease the trial of civilians in military court.
